Summer at Stross

Summer at Stross is an annual summer festival held in Zagreb from June to September. Launched a decade ago to breathe new life into the streets of the Old Town, the festival features a variety of concerts, theatre shows, art workshops and installations, prize contests, fashion shows, parties and other events at one of Zagreb’s most romantic locations, the Strossmayer Promenade.

Located in the Upper Town, the Strossmayer Promenade is one of the most visited places in Zagreb. Nicknamed the Strossmartre, or just Stross, the street runs along the southern walls of the old town and Lotrščak Tower, offering visitors a striking view of the Zagreb Cathedral and the city centre from the deep shade of its chestnut trees.

This year’s festival kicked off on May 29 and will close on September 2, after 100 days of fun, exciting performances and events.

Summer at Stross program

The 2015 Summer at Stross will feature almost 500 artists and performers, including 50 bands and singers. The music program at the festival has already welcomed a number of performers this year to create a good atmosphere and evoke a spirit of the past. Blues, jazz, rock, swing, gospel, bebop, folk music, hard core, cabaret music, and popular tunes going back to the 1950s and 1960s are just some of the styles that could be heard at Stross this summer.

The northern side of the Strossmayer Promenade is hosting the Upper Town Art Colony, organised by the Croatian Association of Artists and the Zagreb Tourist Board for the fourth time. Set up on May 23, the Art Colony will continue to add colour to the old Stross until September 15, with numerous artists creating original new works and offering them for sale.

Visitors can also participate in free art workshops to get acquainted with various forms and techniques and to create art of their own with professional visual artists guiding and mentoring them. The workshops are open every day except for holidays from 2 pm to 4.30 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm. Sunday workshops are for children only.

Children can also enjoy a series of performances from the Little Puppet Theatre LET. The puppeteers will perform a number of plays based on popular fairy tales and old folk tales.

Fans of stand-up comedy can see live acts in front of the Lotrščak Tower every Thursday, while movie fans can enjoy some of this year’s biggest hits in an open summer theatre.

As part of the festivities, the 2015 Summer at Stross also featured a ½ New Year Party and a mongrel beauty contest on June 30.

All the events are free.
