„It was the year 903, when trouble befell our Croatia. Hedervary raised the Hungarian flags, trying to forcefully Hungarianize our Croatia. Rise, oh Ban, Croatia calls you, calls you. Rise, Ban Jelačić!

There isn’t a hero, there isn’t a Croat, like Jelačić the Ban was. But now the black earth hides him, and green grass has covered his grave“ – the lyrics of the well-known patriotic song in honour of today’s most famous inhabitant depicted on the central square in Zagreb, Ban Jelačić.

Are you among those who find it hard to get out of bed in the morning and would love to be able to stay just a bit longer snuggled up in your warm bed? If you are an early riser, surely you have missed some time to do everything you set out to do? You will be glad to know, as an interesting fact that every day we manage to steal some time. Due to the gravitational effects of the Moon, the time on Earth is gradually slowing down. Though very slowly, about two milliseconds every hundred years, in some 200 million years, one day will last for about 25 hours!

But have you ever wondered how do we account time and why clocks show that particular time? These answers have been sought by many scientists and researchers, and to start with we need to know how time has its origin from the Big Bang and the creation of the universe about 13.7 billion years ago. The famous physicist Albert Einstein established that space and time are connected and it is impossible to have time without movement.

What do Giuliano Razzoli, Sandrine Aubert, and Mikaela Shiffrin have in common? Besides being world-class skiers, there is one thing they had in common in the past few years – a touch of sadness on their face as they were leaving the site of one very special ski race. All of them were faster than their opponents and won the race, but none of them took the precious crystal crown trophy home because they all broke it.

This precious, delicate, one-of-a-kind specially designed crown, weighing only 700 grams, consists of stylized snowflakes, ski’s tips and bindings and, thanks to its sophisticated design, takes a whole month to craft with three people heating, grinding and polishing crystal to shape it. The precious crown is given only to the finest and the most outstanding, those who win one of the most prestigious slalom races in the world, the one held on Sljeme in Zagreb. It is the only prize of this particular form in the world of sport and is, therefore, only awarded in a unique race like this one.

“When I see the stone monuments that have decayed, and the erased letters on them, I think about what will happen to what I am doing,” goes a famous quote by Ruđer Josip Bošković (or Roger Joseph Boscovich), a renowned astronomer, mathematician, geodesist, philosopher, poet and the most prominent scientist of his time. A true gentleman, a European man before Europe even existed, a scientist before his time, and a forerunner of many scientific achievements, he was one of the founders of modern science. He left a deep mark on intellectual circles world-wide and his ideas still inspire many modern scientists.

During his lifetime, Bošković wrote more than 75 books in mathematics, mechanics, astronomy, optics, philosophy and literature, he published scientific papers, discussions and verses, he was a mathematics and astronomy professor, he founded an observatory and made astronomical devices. He was also a member of the Royal Society of London and many other science academies. After finishing philosophy and theology studies, he was ordained to the priesthood.

It is not merely a temple of music and a symbol of Zagreb, but also a witness of the national cultural and social life, and quite an unusual concert hall.

It has seen innumerable concerts, performances and plays. A special one takes us several years back, to the year of 1990, when the Lisinski Concert Hall hosted the greatest European musical competition – Eurosong, making its venue the centre of the best musical notes on the continent.
